When recording Roman Trumpet brooches Portable Antiquities & Treasure we describe their decorative mouldings as 'acanthus' style. This ⬇️⬇️⬇️ is what we mean. See the similarity in the deeply lobed leaves. Thanks to Adam Parker 🤟🤖 is in need of biscuits. for the plant picture.

Mystery mine on what I think is Ligularia sp. In York NARS I'll get the gardens manager to confirm plant, but if so seems to be not present on the website. A new host for someone?

Some lovely leaf mines in York Museum Gardens today. All common finds of tiny fly larvae munch through leaf tissues. 1) Agromyza anthracina on nettle. 2) Phytomyza chaerophylii on Cow parsley. 3) Phytomyza minuscula on Aquilegia.

I do so enjoy walking through this entrance to York Museum Gardens. St Mary's Lodge has got such a character with it's architectural history. It's definitely seen things!

#Roman silver denarius coin, issued 109-108 BC. On one side is the head of the god Sol, the god of the sun, with a crown of solar rays. On the reverse is the goddess of the moon, Luna, driving a two-horse chariot through the night sky. #YorkRomans #numismatics

Calling Medieval sherd nerds! Help me out - this is a frag of early med pottery from York. I don't recognise this lattice pattern on the rim. Hard, gritty, grey fabric that feels a bit Torksey-ish. What ware is it? Medieval Archaeology Medievalists.net

Another reason to be horrified: This excellent paper by York Archaeology identified the presence of microplastics in archaeological soil samples from York now and in hsitoric samples taken in the 1980s. Microplastics found c.3m down in Roman layers. 😶 doi.org/10.1016/j.scit…
