If you are a white parent who thinks your kids aren’t “ready” to learn about racism, consider that their non-white friends have no say in the matter of when they’re “ready” to experience it. Or when your kids are “ready” to inflict it in ignorance because they weren’t educated.

And this is ESPECIALLY why we need kidlit about marginalized characters: because BIPOC kids, LGBTQ+ kids, disabled and neurodivergent kids, and kids at the intersections of all those identities need to see that it's not just everybody else who can slay the monsters.

If you see “BIPOC Lounge” and you’re white and your first thought is: omg I CANT ENTER, ITS EXCLUDING ME, I’M SCARED TO EVEN TAKE ONE STEP… Then that’s on you. You need to unpack that. A dedicated space for marginalized groups of people SHOULD NOT illicit a response like that.

Today we wanted to take an honest look at Canada's history in terms of immigration policies. We still have a lot of work to do, and knowing about the past is essential to progress. #education
