No matter how misguided the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War was, UK forces had an official war artist. Henry Tonks, friend of John Singer Sargent, relocated to North Russia from the Western front of #WW1 and left a number of interesting works.

Birkenhead has a Neva Avenue, and Weston-super-Mare & Southampton have a Neva Road each. The name is likely to come from the river in St Petersburg but let us know if it doesn't

#OnThisDay in 1951 Prince Sergei Belosselsky-Belozersky died in Tonbridge. A truly remarcable man: he was Russia's largest landowner, member of Intl The Olympic Games Committee, promoter of football and ice hockey, general in #WW1, Russian and Finnish Civil Wars.

When #WW1 started, Grand Duchess George of Russia got stranded in Harrogate. There, she set up FIVE hospitals for 🇬🇧 soldiers, financed them and personally cared for the wounded. She saved 1200 people in total #InternationalNursesDay

Herne Bay, Kent, has a lovely road called Muscovy Way. However the Russian connection is not direct: it seems to be named after the Muscovy duck, since Mallard Close & Flamingo Drive are nearby

I have just discovered this tool from the Commonwealth War Graves and find that Rifleman Charles H Moxham age 25, late of my address in #Chingford died #OTD in 1916. A bit of a shock that it’s the anniversary of his death today.

Everybody knows about #WW2 Arctic Convoys - but during #WW1 there were also Baltic Convoys carrying supplies from Britain to Russia. This badge was given to commanders of the ships (one of whose descendants became a UK diplomat in Russia blogs.fcdo.gov.uk/martinharris/2… ) #LestWeForget

Count Alexander von Benckendorff, last Russian Imperial Ambassador to London, died of flu #OnThisDay 105 years ago. The diplomat, who spoke very little Russian (he was allowed by the Tsar to write cables in French), made a major contribution to Anglo-Russian alliance during #WW1.
