The Tories remain the largest party on North Somerset council with 13 seats, Labour are second on 10 and the Lib Dem’s on 9 with various independents making up the numbers. Remains NOC but who knows how this council leadership will be decided.

So close of play in the West Country and across the region and the total number of councillors elected today is: LD 70 (+5) Con 39 (-17) Lab 32 (+10) Independent/Localist 17 (-6) Green 10 (+7) (These figures don’t include Bristol which is all up next year)

So the greens manage to hold on to Bishopston and Ashley Down. Labour are slightly up on their 2016 performance when they won one of the seats in the ward but the greens have gained at the expense of the Lib Dem’s since 2016. Sets up a fascinating contest in May!

Chris Skidmore has announced he will step down from Parliament. This will trigger a by-election in Kingswood, a bellwether seat in the Bristol suburbs that is due to be split between the new Bristol North East and North East Somerset & Hanham seats at the next general election
