On Monday at #CHI2022, Haojian Jin presents Lean Privacy Review, a system that allows developers to avoid “privacy backlash” by reviewing data practices prior to an IoT product launch. It elicits feedback from potential users through crowdsourcing. Link: leanprivacyreview.com

On Tuesday at #CHI2022, Haojian Jin presents his study on privacy protective behavior in smart homes. It asks: Do users feel the need to mute their Alexa or avoid walking in front of their security camera? When and why? And, do these strategies work? shift-3.com/resource/pdf/p…

Congrats to the winners of the ACM/IEEE IPSN (ACM/IEEE IPSN 2022, CPS-IoT Week 22 ) best paper award for 2022: "SelfieStick: Towards Earth Imaging from a Low-Cost Ground Module using LEO Satellites" -- Vaibhav Singh (@Singh9Vaibhav), Osman Yaga, Swarun Kumar (Swarun Kumar) CMU! 👏

Congrats to my PhD student Diana Zhang for receiving the 2022 A.G. Jordan Award for her outstanding PhD thesis work & service at Carnegie Mellon University's commencement along with her degree & hood. Diana is my first PhD from Carnegie Mellon ECE and is now at Johns Hopkins APL imaging Saturn's moons! #CMUgrad

In the latest ep of The Internet of Things Podcast 🎧, Stacey Higginbotham and @KevinCTofel chat about CyLab's latest research, "Peekaboo!" "We see a lot of stuff from Carnegie Mellon University CyLab," Stacey Higginbotham says in the ep. "We love those guys." ❤️ staceyoniot.com/podcast-peekab… #IoT #privacy

Dubbed the "SelfieStick," ECE Associate Professor Swarun Kumar (Swarun Kumar) has developed a novel, affordable handheld antenna device that combines several weak transmission signals to capture weather antenna quality images of earth. bit.ly/3a8CH54

This summer 3 of my PhD students are graduating to join Assistant Professorships! Akshay Gadre (Akshay Gadre) at University of Washington, Jingxian Wang (jingxian wang) at NUS (after a stint at MSR) & Haojian Jin (coadvised w. Prof. Jason Hong) at UC San Diego. Super proud! We'll miss them!

I’ll be starting as an Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore’s CS Dept NUS Computing in F2023, where my lab will focus on wireless system, robotics, and materials♻️📡📶🪫🤖 Until then I'll be at Microsoft Research working with the amazing Networking Research Group!

The chapter of my Ph.D. life CMU Human-Computer Interaction Institute is coming to a wistful close. I am excited to share that I am starting as an Assistant Professor Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute this Fall (F2022). My lab will focus on building sensor-based, data-driven applications and studying their privacy implications.

Mosharaf Chowdhury & I are co-chairing the virtual U.S. National Science Foundation NeTS PI meeting on Feb 23-24. We have exciting keynotes by Dr. Jim Kurose & Dr. Margaret Martonosi, a panel on the "Future of Networking" + exciting breakouts planned! If you're a current/aspiring PI join us! witechlab.com/nsf2023/

📢 We are releasing code and dataset for RadarHD (ICRA 2023) - a solution to obtain high resolution, lidar-like point clouds from just a cheap, millimeter wave (mmWave) radar. Super thrilled that Jingxian Wang (jingxian wang) receives the ACM SIGMOBILE doctoral dissertation award "for advancing the science and interdisciplinary applications of wireless energy transfer." Jingxian is currently at MSR & NUS. Proud Advisor Moment! ece.cmu.edu/news-and-event…

Congratulations to Swarun Kumar for receiving the ACM SIGMOBILE Rockstar Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the design of novel techniques to extend the range of low-power networks and the development of the area of programmable targeted wireless energy delivery.

Super excited that my PhD student Akarsh Prabhakara (co-advised with Anthony Rowe) will join UW–Madison CSD as a tenure-track assistant professor! We are very proud of you, Akarsh! 🎉

The era of small satellite constellations is coming! Yet, the infrastructure to connect them from the ground remains limited. Our new publication, Vista, in Association for Computing Machinery TOSN, shows how we can instead use existing ground infrastructure to bootstrap the connectivity bottleneck!
