It's amusing that the massive underestimation of Kamala Harris--itself a major reason for her current success--is now the last line of defense for people who don't like her. "As soon as people remember how bad she is the bump will go away." Don't think it works like that.

This is a spectacular exhibition, an incredible story well-told, kudos & thanks to Port of San Francisco & 🌻 Julie Zigoris 🌻 and the art historians and passionate collectors who brought a lost Jewish artist to life. If you're in SF go see it! sfstandard.com/2024/08/11/loc…

FWIW, as the first editor of The San Francisco Standard I can say that during my tenure at least Moritz didn't order up stories of any kind, and certainly didn't "sic his reporters" on anyone.

You can always count on Hank for smart takes on these sorts of thingsβ€”the social media whisperer for the generous & thoughtful!

One other thing I'll say about this: the MAGA turn of Ben & his wife & his firm is obviously interesting & significant, & they've both been public about their past causes. He announced AZ's new line in a video. So the furious indignation over routine journalistic inquiry, and a

Friends, ping me if you're going to Burning Man. I went last year for the 1st time and thought it was fantastic (the horror stories about the rain were hilariously offbase) so doing it again!

Newcomer is looking for a reporter with a demonstrated track record of getting notable financial scoops who has the charisma and expertise to emcee 200-person events for Silicon Valley insiders $200k-$300k salary

Newspaper endorsements are a relic, they don't influence voters & they hurt news orgs claim to impartiality. BUT, dropping endorsements is a policy decision to be made outside the heat of a race. Backing away at this moment is pretty craven.

Shocked and so, so sad about Jim Ledbetter's untimely passing. He was a great friend and a huge contributor to the Industry Standard, first as builder and leader of the NY Bureau and then doing the same for the European edition, and we later re-united at Reuters too. Among his

silicon valley trumpists... there's been plenty not to like so far but abandoning Ukraine and now killing congestion pricing... wtf are you guys doing

Gotta agree with Emily Hoeven on this, I think the sculpture is great and works very well at the location, though I can see why others might feel differently. But so cranky, sheesh, lighten up! Burning Man is part of the city even if you personally think it's dumb.

We've got Marc Benioff on the pod, exclusive OpenAI reporting, secondary sales data. Lot to dig into this week. Newcomer is undeniably a newsroom. Tom Dotan and Madeline Renbarger writing with me. Jonathan Weber editing. My mom proofreading. Christopher Gates producing the podcast.

"San Francisco just elected a political outsider, Daniel Lurie, as mayor, largely on his promise to bring accountability to runaway public spending." Hm, this is not why Lurie was elected.

This Week in Short OpenAI’s move to buy Windsurf prompted Anthropic to cut off the coding app β€” a sign of whats to come. One thing we can be confident of is crazy AI growth, per Mary Meeker’s β€œTrends” report. A wave of IPOs continued with a big pop for stablecoin provider Circle

Fun to be working as editor at large for Newcomer, with old colleagues Eric Newcomer and Tom Dotan, and newer colleague Madeline Renbarger. Always interesting to see industry patterns repeat themselves and then some, as with the dance between LLMs & developers.
