WEAC is at Capitol today at hearing on bill to enact state law limiting cell phones in public schools. Panel is weighing various opinions about how such a mandate would shake out in our classrooms.

Assembly Ed Cmt voting on bill to align state testing scores to national benchmarks instead of WI standards. Teacher Rep. Angelina Cruz ‘This does nothing to address educational outcomes. This is not the conversation we should be having right now.’

Next up for Assembly Ed Cmt: cursive writing mandate. Would force local school boards to teach cursive in their districts.

Should school boards be forced to add another civics requirement without adding funding? Who defines ‘civic pride,’ for instance? Isn’t this another unfunded mandate?

Assembly Ed Cmt takes up Moms for Liberty-supported bill to usurp local control on access to books, etc. It’s a right parents already have & a politically motivated move, some say.

AB6: mandating how local public schools manage school budgets. Rep. Hong: unfunded, punitive & usurps local control.

A committee vote is happening today on bill to mandate cell phone bans in schools. Local school boards could not provide their own exceptions to what the state would require in law.

Today we’re on site @ state Capitol for AB 24 hearing requiring all WI sheriffs to cooperate with ICE, or lose funding.

Wisconsin's private school "choice" programs cost taxpayers $572.1 million in the 2023-24 school year. That's a 132% increase from just 8 years prior. Over 6 times as many kids attend public school vs private. We cannot afford to keep funding these 2 separate, unequal systems.

Republicans on the Education Committee spent over TEN hours today targeting transgender and nonbinary kids. These hours could’ve been used to fund our schools, fill the special education funding gap, providing school meals for all, etc.

A state budget with $0 for general aid for public schools steals the future from our kids to give more tax cuts to the rich. Anyone claiming to champion public education should be against valuing our kids $3300 LESS than they were 16 years ago and pretending that's okay.

Another reason to speak out against the state budget deal: It would divert 100% of Milwaukee County Traffic Fines from The Common School Fund. Currently, 50% of these are for the Common School Fund. This will decrease revenues for school libraries $2.2 million annually.
