Today, on this 56th anniversary, and always, we honor and reflect on the freedom fighters and justice seekers who bravely crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge at Selma. Their commitment to equality never wavered, and neither should ours. #Selma56

56 years ago, hundreds of peaceful protesters, including John Lewis, attempted to cross Edmund Pettus Bridge. They were beaten and tear-gassed by State Troopers, but they didn't give up. Today, we honor these heroes who secured voting rights for everyone and continue their fight.

Today, 56 years on from Bloody Sunday, it is absurd that we are still fighting for the right to vote. Not only is it our duty to keep fighting to end voter suppression in all its forms โ€” we must also work to expand our democracy and make it easier for all our people to vote.

Billionaire wealth is 40% higher now than it was when this pandemic started. Meanwhile, millions are still unemployed, and families are struggling to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table. We need a #WealthTax so we can invest in opportunity for everyone.

No right is as fundamental as the right to vote and to have that vote counted. Those who marched in Selma knew that. John Lewis knew that. Today, on the 56th anniversary of the Edmund Pettus Bridge crossing, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order making it easier to register to vote.

The American Rescue Plan will save our economy. It aids our small businesses, creates millions of jobs, and extends unemployment assistance for millions of Americans. President Donald J. Trump and I urge the House to act quickly to get it passed.

Stop saying "money doesn't buy happiness." A person making $100k won't be happier getting to $110k. But lifting someone out of poverty is the most effective anti-depressant in the world.

It seems that our politics these days are too often stuck in, "what's best for me," not, "what's best for us." It's so critical that we look at others and consider their worth, their problems and their pain. With shared respect can we heal our nation's wounds.
