"Recent decreases in snow water storage in western North America" is out today: nature.com/articles/s4324… Here we develop a new metric for evaluating the storage of water in the snowpack as a function of the timing and magnitude of precipitation relative to water availability.

Greetings from the snowy Alaskan Arctic! The #SnowEx field campaign has kicked off, and we're ready for ground-based, airborne radar and lidar snow measurements. Radar calibration targets near #Toolik are ready and ground-based teams measured snow on the Arctic Coastal Plain.

Final day in the Arctic for NASA #SnowEx2023 #SnowExAlaska highlights airborne radar and radiometer flights with ground crews taking snow microstructure, density and depth measurements. We were thrilled to see this aircraft with radar flying above us!

Another day of old-fashioned Fairbanks cold. I am driving to work and see a line of cars in front of the temperature sign. This would be one way to start the day:-)

UPDATED! Here is our updated timeline with a bit more specific information on timing and snowfall totals. Travel will likely be very difficult with snow, rain, then more snow and colder temperatures. #akwx #winterstorm

The Fairbanks Airport is now up to 1.79" of precip since midnight, the 7th wettest single day on record. The December 2021 ice storm featured 1.93" of liquid precipitation in one day. With continued rain/snow expected through midnight, it is very possible today will exceed that.
