The Wassamasaw Tribe honored to announce a historic Tribal Alliance Signing Ceremony, marking the first time in SC history that Native American tribes have formally committed to supporting one another through an official contemporary treaty.

The history of South Carolina is inseparable from the history of our Native American tribes. Today, I joined tribal leaders as they signed a first-of-its-kind treaty that strengthens tribal unity and the preservation of Native American culture in South Carolina.

It was a momentous day in Indian Country! The Wassamasaw Tribe proudly joined fellow state and federally recognized tribes in a historic treaty signing—the first such agreement in South Carolina as well as the nation.

This is a significant step forward in our tribe's pursuit of recognition. We are deeply grateful to our community members, both those who were able to witness this occasion and those who offered their support from afar. It's a wonderful time to be a Wassamasaw Indian.

Berkeley County leaders recently joined Native American tribal leaders from around the state for an historic signing of the Tribal Alliance of South Carolina Nation’s Treaty. The milestone moment took place Feb. 5 at the Statehouse in Columbia. A total of nine different tribes
