Our new Vitis Underground preprint where I worked with students in California to sample grape leaves. We found that leaf area was not correlated with lobing, but rather, more highly lobed leaves compensated for the reduction in area with longer veins! 😱🍇🍃 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

It's the final week of the #GraftingTheGrape exhibition Sachs Museum at Missouri Botanical Garden (closes March 31!). Especial thanks to Allison Miller and her Vitis Underground lab for sharing their research on grapevines and grafting to educate the public on this important perennial crop! perennialplantdiversity.org/outreach.html
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Zach Harris Zachary Harris who beautifully and convincingly defended his dissertation today Saint Louis University SLUBiology Danforth Center! #firstgen college student, now PhD, celebrating here with his family. Great job Zach!!! 🍇
Congratulations to the new Dr. Joel Swift Joel Swift on a terrific dissertation defense today Saint Louis University SLUBiology Danforth Center! #firstgen college grad now PhD Joel studied the grapevine microbiome & made wonderful contributions to our grapevine grafting Vitis Underground team.

The paper we scanned all these leaves for was accepted last week! 🎉 It's one thing to write that we scanned almost 1,500 leaves, it's another to look back at the photographic proof. It's odd having another summer without Vitis Underground fieldwork, but plenty of data to keep busy!🍇
Heading home from #ASEV in San Diego - grapes and wine all the time! The future of wine in a changing climate, smoke effects on wine, optimizing site, rootstock and scion combinations, cover crops in vineyards, and so much more - happy to share our Vitis Underground work too!! 🍇🍷
Check out the latest work from Vitis Underground postdoc, Zachary Harris!
In the multi-year “Root to Shoot” Vitis Underground project, a team led by Allison Miller analyzed 7K+ Chambourcin leaves from vines ungrafted & grafted to 3 rootstocks. Rootstock and above-ground environment interact to modulate leaf composition. #graperesearch bit.ly/3elBGbD
