Our latest Vitis Underground preprint led by Zachary Harris describes how temporal and environmental factors interact with rootstock genotype to shape leaf elemental composition in grafted grapevines 🍇🍃 Read more: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Our new Vitis Underground preprint where I worked with students in California to sample grape leaves. We found that leaf area was not correlated with lobing, but rather, more highly lobed leaves compensated for the reduction in area with longer veins! 😱🍇🍃 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

It's the final week of the #GraftingTheGrape exhibition Sachs Museum at Missouri Botanical Garden (closes March 31!). Especial thanks to Allison Miller and her Vitis Underground lab for sharing their research on grapevines and grafting to educate the public on this important perennial crop! perennialplantdiversity.org/outreach.html

I love reading grape/rootstock breeding history 🍇 One of my favourite stories is about Zsigmond Teleki (1854–1910), from Hungary. He ordered Vitis berlandieri canes from France, but their import was restricted because of black rot, so he ordered 10 kg (!) of seeds instead. (1/4)

Our newest preprint is now available 🎉 a terrific multidisciplinary team led by Dan Chitwood scanned over 100 cuttings from Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grafted to 15 rootstocks using X-ray CT to see the impact of rootstock on 30 year old scions! 🍇biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

A long-term study shows that rootstocks act to modulate growth and other scion traits like the ratio of yield to vegetative growth, and can act like climate to affect growth rings, which can be used to monitor genetic, environmental effects. #graperesearch bit.ly/3lH0Rpr

The paper we scanned all these leaves for was accepted last week! 🎉 It's one thing to write that we scanned almost 1,500 leaves, it's another to look back at the photographic proof. It's odd having another summer without Vitis Underground fieldwork, but plenty of data to keep busy!🍇

Heading home from #ASEV in San Diego - grapes and wine all the time! The future of wine in a changing climate, smoke effects on wine, optimizing site, rootstock and scion combinations, cover crops in vineyards, and so much more - happy to share our Vitis Underground work too!! 🍇🍷

In the multi-year “Root to Shoot” Vitis Underground project, a team led by Allison Miller analyzed 7K+ Chambourcin leaves from vines ungrafted & grafted to 3 rootstocks. Rootstock and above-ground environment interact to modulate leaf composition. #graperesearch bit.ly/3elBGbD
