Here is my work-in-progress list of the world’s highest vineyards (in meters asl) starting with Switzerland (1090m). Does anybody have documented evidence of corrections or additions?

A note to Caroline Gilby MW: malvasía riojana is no malvasia/monemvasia at all, but a Spanish grape, alarije, originally from Extremadura, using this prestigious name. Sitges, Canaries: yes. Malvasia: Ancient grape and its sprawling worldwide family decanter.com/premium/malvas…

Victor de la Serna E Growtxo 100% - either fine food or a good neighbourhood restaurant with food of good standard. Fuengirola has lots of chiringuitos that are tourist traps, but there is also fine dining, and if you go to barrios like Boquetillo you have always been able to get a good and humble meal.

At a time of Mexican-Spanish midunderstandings, lunch at La Única, Madrid branch of the ritzy Mexican chain. 3 years ago it opened, talented Madrid-born Andrés Madrigal designed its 'Mexiterranean' menu. He soon left (his brilliant Per Se). La Única not quite as fine now, but OK.

21 Áster. This is La Rioja Alta's branch in Ribera del Duero. All tempranillo. A bit too much new French oak, 15% alc., but much improved in lightness and balance from the old Ribera formula. Good wine.

A growing trend in Spain: own-brand wines by supermarket chains. 2023 Atardecer is a Somontano chardonnay by Enate for Mercadona. Pretty decent, considering the price: €3.50!

No paran, vergonzoso.

My wife, Carmen, today cooked her first lasagna in a long time! This deserved a special wine. Silky 2018 La Viña Escondida, old-vines garnacha from granite soil, Gredos mountains. By our friends Belarmino and Alberto Fernández. Taste at Asturianos, their great 'tasca' in Madrid!

Victor de la Serna E mario canora En my opinion ignorante y atrevida, Corton no merece su Grand Cru status, hay 1er Crus en Volnay que si… y quizás algunos piensen lo mismo de Pommard

Much too young now, but a great vin de garde in the making. 2021 Corullón, the great Gredos mencía by Ricardo Pérez Palacios and Álvaro Palacios. Spain's Grand Cru Burgundy. 97 Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Victor de la Serna E Robert Parker Wine Advocate By coincidence, I had it yesterday. Probably the best Corullon and a great wine in the making. Difficult to find something similar in quality at this price point

Federico Oldenburg shows Luis Gutierrez's highest rated Spanish wines in 2024 for WineAdvocate. Slight correction to Federico Oldenburg's text: Envínate doesn't just makde Atlantic wines in Galicia and Canary Islands, but also Albahra in La Mancha! expansion.com/fueradeserie/g…

A fortunate country despite everything, Spain. My aperitivo, with a nice Negroni: an inexpensive can of zamburiñas (variegated scallops) in scallop sauce. ¡Viva España!

Back to classics today. Antinori Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione Chianti Classico 2015. Perfectly ripe now, dark berries and spice. Very nice (not great) sangiovese.
