Great EFF episode on how democratic process can be reimagined in the digital age! As ⿻ Audrey Tang 唐鳳 highlighted here using vTaiwan's cases, expanding the "bandwidth for citizen participation" & reducing "latency" are crucial for a democracy to better reflects its pluralistic voices.

The Sunflower Movement 10 yrs ago, along w/ g0v & vTaiwan, all stem from a lack of trust in the parliamentary process. Politicians must understand that TW citizens will not tolerate black boxing. Only thru transparency & openness can the parliament gain public trust & legitimacy.

We envision a world in which polities around the globe 🌎 are as engaged as the Taiwanese 🇹🇼 people in the transparent, inclusive, and participatory stewardship of our institutions of self-governance. 🌐 We aspire to achieve the successes of the Sunflower 🌻 Movement everywhere.

What are the protesters outside of Taiwan's parliament currently thinking? Taiwanese protesters are expressing their opinions online through vTaiwan w/ Polis in real time. Here are some of the early results from tonight May 21. These are statements most can agree on now 👇🏾

With Polis & LLM summarisation, vTaiwan captured real-time data & human opinions of the May 21 & 28 protesters on the streets. Turned out, 1/6 of the ppl held opposite opinions, but ~everyone agree that protesting is a citizen's right that should be respected. #democracy

Always love our in-person vTaiwan meetups—brilliant brains, delicious bites, & bold ideas. We made progress on the new site & explored where vTaiwan's headed next—especially how AI could support the many steps of public deliberation & help make the process more scalable. #g0v

Last month, vTaiwan joined the 監察院 National Human Rights Commission's AI consultation, sharing citizen input from our recent public deliberation on AI's impact on human rights. As Taiwan shapes its AI Basic Law, citizen voices need to be directly connected to policy decisions.

How can offline deliberation build on online input? In recent vTaiwan workshops, we’ve been experimenting w/ decision trees — helping ppl locate themselves within opinion clusters. It deepens the conversation. Ppl engage & care more when they feel they’re speaking for a group 🫶🏽
