If you’ve read about recent DV cases in the news, many of the articles mention a Lethality Assessment Protocol, or LAP. So what is the LAP? This week we’ll go into more detail about this tool and how it is used.

The LAP reduces risks and saves lives. It involves law enforcement assessing risks and collaborating with community-based victim service providers. LAP also increases victim’s awareness of their own risk for lethal violence, encouraging engagement with domestic violence services.

A LAP predicts the likelihood of serious injuries or death. It provides an effective method to identify victims of DV who are at the highest risk of being seriously injured or killed by their partners. What are the questions that immediately indicate a high-lethality situation?

Make a plan for how you are going to leave, including where you’re going to go, and how to cover your tracks. You can consider making two plans: one in case you have time to prepare to leave the home and a second one in case you need to leave in a hurry. #dvisallourbusiness

Keep in mind that you may not be able to return home again safely once you leave and should never do so alone. Think ahead to decide what you need to take with you, like important paperwork. Here are some examples of documents or items you might want to take. #dvisallourbusiness
