Our amazing staff at the LINKLine are supporting UDVC's annual DV Solutions conference. In the event of an increased call volume, calls will be forwarded to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Strangulation exams are typically performed by specialized nurses who have received specific training in conducting these types of assessments.

If you’ve read about recent DV cases in the news, many of the articles mention a Lethality Assessment Protocol, or LAP. So what is the LAP? This week we’ll go into more detail about this tool and how it is used.

The LAP reduces risks and saves lives. It involves law enforcement assessing risks and collaborating with community-based victim service providers. LAP also increases victim’s awareness of their own risk for lethal violence, encouraging engagement with domestic violence services.

A LAP predicts the likelihood of serious injuries or death. It provides an effective method to identify victims of DV who are at the highest risk of being seriously injured or killed by their partners. What are the questions that immediately indicate a high-lethality situation?

Visit the NEW Domestic Violence Dashboard by the Department of Public Safety, which displays information collected through the Lethality Assessment Protocol. The information is updated monthly and compares three years' worth of data. siac.utah.gov/intimate-partn…

How can a law enforcement officer use their best judgment in a LAP? An officer may trigger the protocol referral, if not already triggered, as a result of the victim's response to this question:

As part of NNEDV's 20th Annual DV Survey, they are adding a separate form for survivors to participate. Sharing stories can be a step toward healing & a way to engage in national advocacy efforts. surveymonkey.com/r/DVCSurvivorS…

While no screening tool can predict a future homicide, the LAP can help officers AND the victim understand the significant danger in a DV situation & make the appropriate contact with a local DV service provider.

YOU are the expert on your relationship. Think carefully through your situation & do what is safest for you, WHEN it’s safest. Develop a safety plan to help you think ahead. You can work with a DV advocate to develop a strategy. #dvisallourbusiness

Make a plan for how you are going to leave, including where you’re going to go, and how to cover your tracks. You can consider making two plans: one in case you have time to prepare to leave the home and a second one in case you need to leave in a hurry. #dvisallourbusiness

Keep in mind that you may not be able to return home again safely once you leave and should never do so alone. Think ahead to decide what you need to take with you, like important paperwork. Here are some examples of documents or items you might want to take. #dvisallourbusiness

Develop a plan to keep any evidence of the abuse & take it with you when you leave. Make sure to keep this evidence in a safe place that the abuser will not find – this may mean that you have to keep it in a locked drawer at work or with a friend. #dvisallourbusiness
