Back in the real world, what has done huge damage to the UK fishing industry? The Toriesโ€™ Brexit deal - which risked knocking a staggering 30% off fishing output by creating huge barriers for a sector dependent on exporting to the EU

BBC's ben Chu sums up the UK-EU reset 0.04% gain for fishing 1.1% gain for food manufacturing A far cry from the 5% GDP that Brexit is costing the UK

The way the Brexit right has carried on today, youโ€™d think Starmer just rejoined the EU. If only! In reality Starmer just made Brexit slightly less shit, slightly more stable for a little longer. Youโ€™d think theyโ€™d thank him.

Right. The morning after the Uk-EU summit. Is it too much to hope that everyone whose entire political vocabulary consists of โ€œBrusselsโ€, โ€œfishermanโ€, โ€œbetrayalโ€ and โ€œsurrenderโ€ has now slunk back into the woodwork? Is it safe to come out now?

You wouldn't know it from today's newspaper front pages screaming "betrayal", but new YouGov polling finds that 66% of British people now want the Government to deliver a closer relationship with the EU, compared to just 14% who don't

I canโ€™t do this anymore. This site is a sewer. The โ€œstay and fightโ€ argument is all very well, but even if youโ€™re reciting Shakespeare, whoโ€™s listening when raw sewage is being blasted at you from every angle? All human nastiness is here, revived and advancing.

Itโ€™s the exact same mistake as with Brexit. Telling people โ€œdonโ€™t go thereโ€ while simultaneously going there with your own rhetoric and immigration policy.

Really tired of the endless lump fallacy posts about defence spending vs welfare spending. Remember that the Attlee government, founders of the NHS, founder members of NATO, spent big on both.

UK referendums are weird, arenโ€™t they? Vote in an election and we all know the mandate expires in 5 years. But a referendum - how long before expiry? It seems to be a totally unspecified โ€œlong timeโ€, a โ€œgenerationโ€, maybe, whatever that is. They just seem half thought through.

There are two types of European country: those that are in the EU, because it makes economic sense, and those that build closer ties with the EU, because it makes economic sense. There is only one where this has become the economic sense that dare not speak its name.

Why shouldnโ€™t people be chucked out of places for their politics? The whole point of politics is they describe what is and isnโ€™t publicly acceptable. They set the boundaries. If you say there must be no boundaries you are ironically saying there must be no politics.
