Our three speakers are giving their introductions and an overview of their takes on the impact of AI on assessment. Tom Moule of Jisc will begin asking questions shortly! #UWCampfire

Rob Howe begins by answering the question of "what context should students (not) be allowed to use AI?" - he comments that some of the biggest challenges perceived so far come through the higher stakes exams - and recommends talking to students to get a clearer image #UWCampfire

Timothy Nichol mentions moves towards competency based assessments, which do not simply require you to demonstrate knowledge in an exam sense. Says this could be seen as a response to some difficulties AI might pose #UWCampfire

Steve Pettifer likens the current state of AI as similar to "the calculator question" - if it is inevitable that it will be used in a professional sense, is the question instead about making sure that the person being assessed is using the tools correctly? #UWCampfire

Rob Howe comments that some AI tools might be able to level the playing field some some students, allowing them to get past barriers they may be seeing to their learning outcomes #UWCampfire

AI literacy is raised once again as a key talking point. Rob Howe comments that it can shine a spotlight on those with lower AI literacy, as it is very obvious they do not know how to use the tools as well as others - which can negatively affect these students #UWCampfire

Question raised: "how do you force the use of AI to achieve subject related tasks being used, and how do you see that being taught?" #UWCampfire

Timothy Nichol says we need to accept that this is a brand new skill set that needs to be incorporated, which means understanding what AI literacy means as part of a curriculum. #UWCampfire

Steve Pettifer says at the moment we are missing a way of giving colleagues and students an idea of what it is they are interacting with, and what properties and value it can bring. This would ensure more meaningful and knowledgable interactions #UWCampfire

Steve says at the moment we have no clue what the black box of AI at the moment is really doing with the prompts we put in - feels like we are missing something in simply teaching prompt engineering #UWCampfire

Timothy Nichol comments on the ethical issues underpinning AI, and says that we must discuss incorporation, rather than replacement. AI cannot replace, it must be used to augment within modules to create a context in which students understand its usage in the future #UWCampfire

Rob Howe says that knowing how to interpret AI and having the skills to do so is very important, we must have a base level of understanding if we are to be using these tools at our institution #UWCampfire

Rob Howe says we need to let AI do what it can do well, but all while letting students do what they are best at, and use it as needed. Humans simply do some things better - it is all about balance. #UWCampfire

Accessibility of AI tools is now being raised, and the digital divide is being highlighted. Robe Howe says that these tools could potentially add millions to institutional budgets. This means that access must be appropriate and meaningful #UWCampfire

Timothy Nichol says that they are trying to encourage staff to use accessible AI platforms in their examples. But understands these often change, and so this breeds instability. It does however mean that they have not had to commit to one product #UWCampfire

Timothy Nichol is discussing frameworks within his institution, and that they now need to invest a lot in future staff development. The expectation is that the framework will be refined as staff are increasing in usage and understanding. A pragmatic approach #UWCampfire

Rob Howe says this ia a "fast moving journey" - if we try to write a policy, by the time it is approved it will likely be out of date! At the moment, he believes the issue needs to be worked with organically #UWCampfire
