During Apokries, a custom which originated in the Ottoman era is revived in Samos, Greece - in which Turkish judges who claimed taxes are mocked. The oldest man in the village dresses as the judge, and rides into the village backwards on a donkey for a satirical court hearing.

Every year during Apokries, the small town of Galaxidi in Central Greece holds a flour war called Alevromoutzouromata! The festival has taken place since the Ottoman era when residents would defy their rulers by painting each other in ash and dancing in the streets.
