Many of us have given up on Dr. King’s Dream. We’d never admit it, but it’s true. We don’t see racial unity as possible or even desirable. History might even support that position. But God’s directives aren’t limited by what we can see or predict. It’s a matter of faith. #MLKDay

It appears to me that two of the biggest problems facing modern Americans include loneliness and exhaustion. The church must be a place of being seen as well as a place which cultivates a weekly day of rest. These two values alone would bring massive healing to our communities.

The most persistent advice in his spiritual direction was to explore the wounds, to pay attention to the feelings, which are often embarrassing and shameful, and follow them to their roots. - Henri Nouwen, speaking of John Eudes, a Trappist monk

“Certainly there was an Eden on this very unhappy earth. We all long for it, and we are constantly glimpsing it: our whole nature at its best and least corrupted, its gentlest and most humane, is still soaked with the sense of ‘exile’.” - Tolkien Letter #96

Would you be happy if your spouse said, “We can be married just one morning a week, but I’ll give you an allowance?” God doesn’t want just your tithe or Sunday morning. He wants way more than that. He wants your heart. He wants YOU.

Don’t skip the 4th verse of “Hark!” Come, Desire of nations, come, Fix in us Thy humble home; Rise, the woman’s conqu’ring Seed, Bruise in us the serpent’s head. Adam’s likeness, now efface, Stamp Thine image in its place: Second Adam from above, Reinstate us in Thy love.

What's considered "evangelism" by many churches is really marketing, differentiating our congregation (cool & energetic) from the one down the street (uncool & boring). The "evangel" is an announcement, not a brand, & our enemy is sin, death, & the devil—not one another! ⛪✌️

"Take our minds, and think through them. Take our lips, and speak through them. Take our hearts, and set them on fire with love for thee. What we know not, teach us. What we have not, give us. What we are not, make us. For Jesus Christ's sake." (For a Holy Life, 1662BCP, p689

Holy Saturday reminds us that the space between death and resurrection is often dark, lonely, and disorienting. Life can feel like one long Holy Saturday. But we are invited to cling to God nonetheless because something new is about to burst forth.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Ps 127:1-2
