I played D&D for almost 2 decades without understanding this. Believe it or not it was by watching Little Wars TV on YT that I came to understand what a campaign was. After that, everything clicked. If you want to truly understand how to play D&D, study wargaming.

SeriousDM AlchemicRaker *Something* has to create conflict in order for it to be a game. If it's only a chart, the chart gets repetitive. If it's only the DM, the DM burns out. Only by putting it on the players is it possible to create enough to sustain the game indefinitely
