Just got round to reading this and it makes some interesting reading, it misses some real issues though and seems to be rather blaming of parents. Also the 3 "experts" who compiled it have never set foot in a challenging school. institute.global/insights/publi…

This is an interesting paper and lots to think about. I think a couple of things are missing in terms of the over diagnosis section. 1. Growth in poverty, ACES and lack of protective buffers 2.A rigid curriculum steplab.co/resources/incl…

Izzy Garbutt In it, Izzy states “the pressure students are under to perform is excessive,” with mid-2010s ed reform “seeing an increase in content and more emphasis on examinations…mental health has suffered as a consequence”. Int stats don't point in good direction; policy has qs to answer.

I've been having a think about different approaches to behaviour and come to the conclusion that people have more in common than they think they do.

Sometimes kids need to be told stuff. Sometimes they need to find out for themselves. At other times we need to help them find it out.

It's sad to see so many people on here having a go at Jamie Oliver about his dyslexia campaign. He's not a teacher how dare he etc. I think this shows a lack of maturity and it's very defensive. Listen to voices of loved experience. Don't dismiss them.

The principle in science where you welcome challenge is called falsifiability. Rather than seeking to confirm a theory, true scientific inquiry should involve attempting to falsify it. I'm not sure the Science of Learning crowd gets this?

Tony Sammon (@tonysammon) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A rigorous "science of learning" would strive to integrate new findings and refine theories based on evidence, rather than simply protecting them and belittling and shaming those who challenge it's assumptions.

I wonder if teaching and learning is more of a craft than a science. Craft's original meaning was broader, encompassing strength, power, and the general ability to accomplish something, whether through physical might or intellectual skill.

In the same way a recipe doesn’t make a chef, research doesn’t make a teacher. It’s the practice, the judgment, and the relationships that define excellence in the classroom.

The science of learning is real. But so are trauma, fear, hunger, belonging, and joy. If your model ignores the child’s story, it’s not science — it’s just control dressed up as research.
