It is with profound sadness that The Yorkshire County Cricket Club announces the passing of Harold Dennis “Dickie” Bird MBE OBE, one of cricket’s most beloved figures, who died peacefully at home at the age of 92.

So very sorry to hear that the great Dickie Bird has pulled stumps. He was a national treasure and I was fortunate to have shared some hugely enjoyable times with him over the years. At 92 he had a good innings. Farewell friend.

23 September 1938 | A German Jewish girl, Mirjam Helene Friedmann, was born in Berlin. The family fled to Prague in December 1938. On 16 October 1941, Mirjam was deported to the Litzmannstadt ghetto, at the end of August 1944 to #Auschwitz. She was murdered in a gas chamber.

29 September 1935 | Czech Jewish girl, Alice Wallersteinová, was born in Prague. She was deported to #Auschwitz from #Theresienstadt ghetto on 6 September 1943. She did not survive.

I’ve deliberately dragged-out reading this book so that it has lasted me thru the season. Today I read the final 2 chpts. Crisply written. Often funny. Hugely sentimental. Evokes memories of great series and players. Very strongly recommend to all cricket lovers. Cc Huw Turbervill
