The second project "Path Replay Backpropagation: Differentiating Light Paths using Constant Memory and Linear Time" (with Delio Vicini and Sebastien Speierer) fixes a fundamental scalability bottleneck shared by all physically based differentiable rendering done so far. (1/6)

Thanks to Heloise de Dinechin we were able to fix a subtle bug in our reference implementation of the "specular manifold sampling" (SIGGRAPH 2020) paper. Convergence is now considerably improved in some cases. See here for the updated paper and explanation: rgl.epfl.ch/publications/Z…

At 11 am PT (in 2 hours) I'll be answering questions about our #SIGGRAPH2021 paper "Monte Carlo Estimators for Differential Light Transport" (rgl.epfl.ch/publications/Z…) in this virtual session: siggraph2021.hubb.me/fe/schedule-bu… Feel free to join us if you're registered!

Do you enjoy building graphics software? My lab is looking to recruit a research engineer to help develop the next generation of Mitsuba, a physically-based renderer for solving inverse problems. A job ad with more details is posted here: recruiting.epfl.ch/Vacancies/2073…

I successfully defended my PhD thesis! I feel honored to be Wenzel Jakob {deprecation notice}'s first student to graduate and it's been a pleasure to be a part of this fantastic lab for five years. Thanks, Wenzel!

I am excited to announce *Dr.Jit*, a just-in-time compiler for differentiable rendering. Dr.Jit is the foundation of the differentiable rendering stack at EPFL and powers the upcoming Mitsuba 3. The project is a joint work with Sebastien Speierer, Nicolas Roussel, and Delio Vicini. 1/8

*Mitsuba 3* is now available! It's a major redesign of the lab's infrastructure for differentiable rendering building on the Dr.Jit just-in-time compiler announced yesterday. Full video link: tinyurl.com/mitsuba-tut 1/10

Since a large part of the graphics community seems to be making the move to Mastodon I also signed up over there: mastodon.gamedev.place/@tizian

I've had great fun spending some of my free time over the last months developing a small music box toy for the #playdate console. Check it out in case you have one of these! tizian.itch.io/playdate-music… cc Playdate Hello Playdate Podcast

Happy April Fools' day everyone! To celebrate the occasion, here is "Noodles", a small path tracer built entirely inside Blender 🔶's shader node editor: tizianzeltner.com/projects/noodl… 🍜 Alternative title: a silly joke idea that got way out of hand. Co-conspirator: @b_nicolet

After some shipping delay I also just got my hands on the new 4th edition of PBRT! It again includes some excellent additions so I'm looking forward to going through it once more. Here's the mandatory picture on the (now rearranged) graphics shelf 🫖 📚 🙂

NVIDIA is thrilled to share our SIGGRAPH 2023 papers. It is our best SIGGRAPH yet, with ~20 papers authored in partnership with over a dozen universities. Generative AI, 3D content creation, neural rendering, neural physics, and more... blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2023/05/0…

We finally get to share our neural materials research. We created custom highly-realistic reference materials, we invented new neural models, and we built new graphics systems. End result is these neural materials run in a real-time path tracer. research.nvidia.com/labs/rtr/neura…

Following over 1.5 years of hard work (w/Nicolas Roussel& Rami Tabbara), we just released a brand-new version of Dr.Jit (v1.0), my lab's differentiable rendering compiler along with an updated Mitsuba (v3.6). The list of changes is insanely long—here is what we're most excited about🧵

Methods like NeRF and Gaussian Splats model the world as radioactive fog, rendered using alpha blending. This produces great results.. but are volumes the only way to get there?🤔 Our new SIGGRAPH'25 paper directly reconstructs surfaces without heuristics or regularizers.
