Two important retroperitoneal #sarcoma papers both presented at CTOS are finally out!

1) Published in #EJC (EORTC ) shows that high-volume specialist centres (>24 cases yr) are an independent predictor of survival. 5-yr OS = 42% in non-specialist centres vs 51.7% in low-volume specialist centres and 62.8% in high-volume specialist centres doi.org/10.1016/j.ejca…

2) Published in BJS shows that inter-centre agreement across RPS MDTs in GB was low. Around 60% of pts in the study could either have been deemed resectable or unresectable depending on the centre they had attended. doi.org/10.1093/bjs/zn…

High-volume specialist centres are the way forward!

Fabio Tirotta showed that not all MDTs are the same and for patients requiring complex surgery, care in a high volume centre is critical for optimal perioperarive and long term cancer specific outcomes.

Christmas dinner of the Sarcoma service Chirurgia dei Sarcomi INT version 3.0 of Istituto Tumori : wonderful group of surgeons, nurses, case managers, clinical trial coordinators, secretaries all dedicate to research and cure of #sarcoma #GIST #desmoid. 21 beds, 4 operations suits per week 1/4

6 full time surgeons, 1 case manager, 2 clinical trial coordinators, 24 nurses, 4 secretaries, 1 surgeon scientist, 8 residents in general surgery. All together in the largest single institution service dedicated to surgery for sarcomas and GIST worldwide 2/4

1500 new patients per year seen in consultation, 3500 follow up visit, 450 new sarcoma/GIST/desmoid patients managed each year (>1/10 of the incidence patients in Italy), a few millions € of grants for research, over 10 clinical studies open to recruitment or follow up. 3/4
