Today we offer condolences to conservation colleagues at Panthera for the loss of their founder Dr Alan Rabinowitz. Remembered as one of the world's most respected big cat scientists & conservationists, our thoughts are with all at Panthera & Alan’s family at this sad time.

#Tigers have been hitting headlines this week - & for once the news is good! This week the UK government has pledged £2.1m to tackle illegal wildlife trade & to protect critically endangered species & habitats - including the forests of Indonesia, home to the Sumatran tiger.

A collaborative team of David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation experts are in Sochi, Russia for the 70th CITES Standing Committee. They join some 700 delegates from around the world to discuss crucial wildlife conservation issues. #Tigers on the agenda.

Surprisingly tigers aren't descended from sabretooth tigers. Fossils in China show that #tigers evolved over 2m years ago. The sabretooth is a different species, which died out 10,000 years ago. With only 3,500 wild tigers left we must stop their extinction from our modern world.

In a recent report by one of our ground-based conservation partners, the Wildlife Trust of India tiger numbers are gradually increasing in parts of India. Tiger numbers stand at around 2,967, which is an increase from 2,226 in 2014 (a rise by 33%).
