You know what?, i think the opposite is true, rings are being harmed by the modern games. There's no bonus stages, big rings at the end or even extra lives. At that point you only pick a bunch of them for the score or just one for the protection

At this point they should do a whole new version of Sonic 4 combining the episodes 1 and 2 + a new 3rd episode (and the metal Sonic campaign) They already got a framework for classic Sonic's physics in 3d with Superstars, they might as well capitalize on it, right?
