Exeter's newest Low traffic neighbourhood was removed after noisy & law breaking opposition from drivers. The FB group cheering their removal lays bare their #motornormative thinking. Not concern for children's safety but "if a kid gets hurt we might be inconvenienced" 49👍 😭

Lol the attempt to deflect with "good & bad on both sides" People who supported planted flowers, protected school children, wrote thankful emails. People against vandalised planters, drove violently into those manning safe streets, put poo through councillors letterboxes.

For anyone reading this far (I'd understand if you're bored by his attempts at diversions from #motornormativity) there were also lots of drivers, elderly, disabled & others in FAVOUR of the scheme.

"People Power! The Nation is Uniting against this Tyranny" What is this tyranny? A bus lane. A bus lane with slightly longer hours. This comment is from a leading campaigner against Exeter's recent Low Traffic Neighbourhood. The state of things. facebook.com/share/p/xuTtF7…

Perhaps @steve_race will be now be able to stop Cllr Phil Bialyk and Exeter City Council from being so damn lilly livered and build a cycling & walking network suitable for people in our fantastic city. theguardian.com/politics/artic…

Cllr Phil Bialyk Caspar Hughes @caspar-hughes.bsky.social @steve_race Exeter City Council Take some leadership! Stop trying to shift the blame away from you. You voted to scrap a safe streets scheme, and voted to stop a plan for a slight extension in bus lane times. You lead the party with a majority on that committee, and majority of your party voted with you!

Cllr Phil Bialyk Caspar Hughes @caspar-hughes.bsky.social @steve_race Exeter City Council Hi Phil, as a newly-appointed member of HATOC you voted to stop the Active Steets Trial. Other Exeter City Council members, who you lead, also sit in HATOC and have voting rights, so you are part of the decision-making process here. Caspar is right ask you about on this vital issue.

About no. 15 in the thread... "Look for times when people's lives are disrupted and GO IN HARD to encourage change at this point." DCC did virtually no comms before, during or after the Heavitree & Whipton AST. Is that one reason why it failed?

Didn't Councillor Cllr Phil Bialyk say exactly this to the highways committee (HATOC), while halting progress on sustainable travel? All this while leader of Exeter city council. "I'm just one man".

Of course 20mph limits will be set where some drivers think the "aren't needed". That's why we have speed limits and they are set for the good of society as a whole rather than the preferences of individual drivers.

Women are thinking about this all the time. Men haven't noticed. Aren't registering. They don't even know her name. Say her name. Gisele Pelicot.

Every woman you know has taken a longer route. Has doubled back on herself. Has pretended to dawdle by a shop window. Has held her keys in her hand. Has made a fake phone call. Has rounded a corner and run. Every woman you know has walked home scared. Every woman you know.
