Meet the Local Volume Mapper! It's a new Sloan Digital Sky Surveys instrument joining the fleet at Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory that will map the Milky Way and our neighboring galaxies on a larger scale than ever before. impact.sloan.org/the-sloan-digi⦠#sciencetwitter

We are seeking a Program Head for the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys SDSS-V/Milky Way Mapper ! This is a HUGE opportunity to lead one of the SDSS-V Mappers focused on stellar astrophysics and the Milky Way! "My God, It's Full of Stars!" -- 2001: A Space Odyssey (and also, Sloan Digital Sky Surveys SDSS-V/Milky Way Mapper)

You can still join Sloan Digital Sky Surveys and dig into the data! The LVM is here!

Exciting Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory news! New suite of telescopes set to begin surveys. Unlike other surveys, which focus on individual objects, the Local Volume Mapper will allow Sloan Digital Sky Surveys to understand the cosmic ecosystem surrounding the Milky Way carnegiescience.edu/local-volume-mā¦

Pole Position for Sloan Digital Sky Surveys! Source: Dennis Crabtree 2017-2021 compilation. Thank you to Sloan Foundation Heising-Simons Foundation U.S. National Science Foundation U.S. Department of Energy European Research Council (ERC) and all of the Institutional members through the years! If you love your data, set it free! Ann Finkbeiner David W Hogg

I am proud of what astronomers have done in Sloan Digital Sky Surveys with U.S. National Science Foundation funding. Mid-scale research is at the scientific frontier, but below the political-decision-making scale. They are the largest scientific projects you can do in academia while remaining purely rational.

Andā¦.there goes the big H. Removing the tax exempt status of these institutions is K.O. for the āCathedralā. I think itās a bad idea but Pessimists Archive would just call me a Luddite. Maybe. āMake before breakā
