Fascinating analogy drawn here between "Emancipation Day" & the (Roman) week here as disruptive innovations emerging form the social periphery How prescient re Juneteenth! From jstor.org/stable/3288728

In case you’re still trying to decide how to spend your day tomorrow, please keep in mind that, according to the NYT, It’s “immoral” to take a day off on Monday, July 3rd!!

Check out last paragraph of this delicious letter Myth of Chinese observance of sabbath/week (they didn’t) was common among Sabbatarian Christians It can be traced back to R Judah HaLevi’s Kuzari, in 1140 Ultimately derives from misreading of Genesis as presenting the 1st week

Want to smile? Read this! P.S. Also great insight into something we can’t appreciate today: it was hard to know what to do with/on longer weekend content.time.com/time/magazine/…

So "weekday" is just the opposite of "weekend," right? & it means any day but Saturday & Sunday, right? & so the words "weekday" & "weekend" must therefore have been born at the same time, right? Nope!!

Not sure who needs to hear this but it’s possible to both a. Recognize the infamous moral abomination of American chattel slavery & b. Be inspired by the ingenuity & drive of enslaved persons (including reinventing Sunday/sabbath!) How? Read! cc I Read This Over Shabbos™️ thefirstweek

In the US, the opening up of Sunday for public sporting events was city-by-city, & largely done by early 20s (with baseball as impetus), thus paving the way for the NFL to take up Sunday as the day left over by college (Saturday) & h.s. football (Fri) historycollection.com/the-random-his…

In case you lived in 1776 & you knew the date but not the day of the week (& knew a bit of French), you could just consult your handy-dandy coin including the "table of Sundays" (useful also for tracking a variety of useful notable dates throughout the [French] year)

Excellent take on Sabbath vs. market by C. Cep in The New Yorker-- w this great line echoing back to Jeremiah, Nehemiah, & Amos Issue is more challenging/interesting though since (weekly) markets can also be source of liberation!! See Natasha Lightfoot 🇦🇬's work: x.com/ewzucker/statu…
