I’ve had a brilliant day at the The Great War Group conference in Bristol. Some engaging speakers included Mike Taylor on German trophy guns and Jamie Nimmo on the Scottish involvement at Loos in 1915. Jamie Nimmo

Next up was Jim Smithson speaking about French and British innovation and learning. Peter Hart and Warren Smith made a good double act on Hubert Rees at 1st Ypres. (So good that I parted with £££ for a book!) Mapping could have been a little clearer… 😂

The result of the Allied bombing of the dykes around Walcheren in October 1944, flooding most of the island. Although much changed today, the two gun bunkers of German strongpoint W14 are still there, as are the houses and barns in the north. 📷 IWM C 4674, C 4675 & Google Maps

Enjoyed my visit to the RE-Play wargames event at the RE Museum today. A good variety of games on show and I had several good discussions with participants. Nice to see so many traders here, too. £££ may have been parted with… Milton Hundred

Exercise Tartan Musket, 1992. Our re-enactment group took part in a staff ride put on by 40 Field Regiment RA. Using the battlefields of Hastenbeck and Minden to consider coalition warfare in the C18 and today. A tremendous few days. Photos from Soldier Magazine.

I thoroughly enjoyed this very readable, informative and comprehensive book. It covers the development and demise of the U-boat arm, and life ashore and at sea for the crews and staff involved. Highly recommended.
