In hiring, it might be time to get rid of experience requirements. Data: past experience rarely predicts future performance. What matters is past performance—and current motivation and ability. It's how well people can learn to do a job, not how long they've already done it.

When feedback isn’t helpful, try asking for advice. New experiments: requests for advice elicit more constructive input than requests for feedback. Feedback tends to focus on how well you did in the past. Advice shifts attention to how you can do better in the future.
