UNDP continues to work closely with partners through innovative financing to support wildlife conservation. The Tiger Landscape Investment Fund, for instance, channels resources to protect tigers in countries like Malaysia 🇲🇾 whilst benefiting local communities. BIOFIN

Yesterday was World Wildlife Day and we posted a reel to commemorate the day and also to highlight the plight of one of world’s rarest turtles.

Pelf Nyok (@pelf81) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Yeap, river terrapins are one of the world’s rarest freshwater turtles. They are only found in Cambodia (literally rediscovered in 2000) and Peninsular Malaysia. Comparatively, green turtles that many are familiar with, are found in 80+ countries.

This year, the terrapin nesting season started a month later than it did last year. Possibly due to the delayed monsoon. They finally nested on Valentine’s Day and we’ve saved close to 1,000 eggs for conservation so far. Hope to exceed last year’s 1,506 eggs 🙏🏻

Thank you UK in Malaysia🇬🇧 for the opportunity to participate in an insightful discussion on not only driving volunteerism among youths but also promoting community resilience through our collective impacts on the ground. #CommonwealthDay

It appears that youths don’t volunteer much these days due to a lack of opportunities (outside of the GKV) and/or a high entry barrier (paid volunteering experience, transport, accommodation, meals). But as a youth, do you agree? If not, what do you think are the reasons?

Pelf Nyok (@pelf81) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Why aren’t youths volunteering much these days? Share your experiences/thoughts in the comments to help us (non-profits) work out a win-win situation for everybody 💪🏻 UK in Malaysia🇬🇧

If you’re a youth in Malaysia and do not volunteer your time/services, please tell us why? What can non-profits/civil societies do to attract the youths to contribute to nation-building? What’s lacking?

After more than a decade, this is the second consecutive year where we managed to collect more than 1,500 eggs for incubation. As the nesting season begins to slow down, we’re hoping to hit 2,000 eggs this year! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Someone posted on LinkedIn that Harvard University is waiving tuition fees for families earning under $200,000 and the author asked, “What are we doing to help more kids compete for opportunities?” 1. At Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia, we don’t charge an internship training fee. 🧵

A restaurant assistant was fined RM5,000 for possessing an African spurred tortoise—a protected species—for feng shui purposes and without a license. thesun.my/malaysia-news/… Hat tip to @Cshepherd7R!

Turtles are wildlife and they should be left in the wild. Do not keep them as pet, or for whatever reason. If you absolutely must keep them, ensure that you have the proper documentation/ license. Especially if they’re listed in the Malaysian Wildlife Conservation Act.
