Talking hurricanes, #climategrief, and my recent @cltampabay.bsky.social piece with Ben Montgomery, Ray Roa (left this hellscape, now on BlueSky) and Mitch Perry on WMNF Community Radio, The Skinny, 11-12, Fridays. I go on about 11:30. wmnf.org/events/the-ski…

Lunch with two environmental scientists after #Milton and #Helene. I asked, what can we do about future flooding in the Tampa Bay area? Their simultaneous, one-word answer: "retreat."

Grading in the AI age maddens me b/c of ghosting. I have to think how I can respond to message posts, saying "you didn't really write this" or "this is formulaic bullshit," without being sure whether I'm insulting the student. I only suspect it came from a computer.

Today's reading (coincidentally) in American lit to 1860: I speak the password primeval .... I give the sign of democracy; By God! I will accept nothing which all cannot have their counterpart of on the same terms. --Walt Whitman, "Song of Myself" (1855)

#Academics: Dig in--research, teach, write, administer with wisdom and principle. Humanities scholarship is painfully relevant, it's up to us to be visible. The United States is no different than it was yesterday (the election was but a marker). It's up to us to respond.

"My thoughts have turned [to] Neil Postman’s ... Amusing Ourselves to Death ... as entertainment becomes a larger element in news coverage, especially on TV, a political leader’s image and ability to entertain us may become more important than their actual policies or actions."

My basically liberal/middle-of-the-road GI tract still will not stomach this election. I have not landed something solid in the toilet (when lucky enough to reach the toilet) since Wednesday afternoon. I am the body politic.
