I’ve been particularly unobservant for several decades and only just noticed this rather large spine on the rear tibia of a relatively common beetle. Give yourself a pat on the back if you can name it! Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
Tricky pair of Zopheridae, very subtle differences difficult to describe for comparison. On the left Synchita variegata, on the right Synchita undata. If it’s on Beech good bet it’s variegata, on Sycamore undata. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland #Saproxylic #Coleoptera #Zopheridae
Orectochilus villosus, the Hairy Whirligig, from my last survey of 2024. Midlands river. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
Metoecus paradoxus, North-east Derbyshire garden, this morning. Garden usually has three wasps nests, this year only one nest so pleasantly surprised to see this beetle this year. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
Very common but very nice, the golden hairs on the inside femur and tibia really glow on the riffle beetle Limnius volckmari. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland #Elmidae
Metoecus paradoxus. Mid-October, a little late in the season but not unheard of. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland North-east Derbyshire garden.
Trilobite! Larvae of Silpha tristis, Nottinghamshire farmland. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
You’ve got to love a Platystethus cornutus. Pretty common but a quality Staph all the same. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland #Staphylinidae
Ilybius fuliginosus, be it puddle, pond, lake margin, stream or river, this little beast finds its way into the net. Probably the most catholic in terms of habitat of all UK water beetles. Oh, and it’s a bit of a looker as well with its beautiful bicoloured elytra. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
Haliplus mucronatus, a rather attractive haliplid and a bit of a beast compared to other UK species. Gwent Levels. Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
Philonthus debilis aedeagus. It’s a pointy thing! #Staphylinidae Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland
