This is an excellent piece. Please read -- the liberal arts can and should survive and thrive, and Prof. Frey was proving that at Tulsa before her (very successful) program was axed.

A drop in the bucket compared with the Colbert firing or the public broadcasting debacle, but the NYT's desire to "go beyond the traditional review" is appalling. By "traditional review," you mean, like, an essay? Crafted with thought and care? You're sick of that? God help us.

CLUELESS (now turning 30—!) is great. But there are other reasons to sing the praises of its director, Amy Heckerling: time.com/7302138/cluele…

So how can it still be called the Environmental Protection Agency? Needs to change its name to the Environmental Exploitation Agency.

Project! Just dyed these fisherman sandals a muted olive brown. Forgot to take a “before” pic, but it was the same yellow as pic 3 (with the exact same scuffs). I loved the original color, just not on me. I’m so happy with the way they turned out—and that I didn’t mess them up!

Like me—and Baz Luhrmann—you may have always believed that Colonel Parker was a user who mostly took advantage of Elvis. With THE COLONEL AND THE KING (the great) Peter Guralnick convinced me otherwise. time.com/7307618/the-co…

At its best, though, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER gets at something deeply romantic: the need to move, to dance, and the need to be who you’d like to be. Nirvana is the dance; when the music stops, you return to being ordinary. (1977)

this vanity fair news sucks. our industry's deteriorating under capitalists who prioritize clicks over quality. PR giving so much press time to influencers over journalists is contributing to this. support your news sources by reading articles in full instead of screenshots.

So let me get this straight: VF is boosting its focus on Hollywood, which it considers a “core” area, even as it axes a terrific critic and a seasoned, thoughtful correspondent? So it’s going into the PR business, you mean.

News, personal: Chicago Tribune has eliminated the post of film critic. This left me two options: wait for a newsroom reassignment or take the buyout. I took the buyout. Time for something new, somewhere else. Exit column later this week. (1/3)

JAY KELLY is a restless, wriggly, not wholly satisfying movie—but Clooney is at his Clooniest, and that's hardly a bad thing. From Venice: time.com/7313115/jay-ke…
