Genetically engineered E. coli bacteria learned to master 3x3 board games such as tic-tac-toe, even when starting from a completely ignorant state. This may be useful to allow complex ecosystems to be chemically reprogrammed to learn complex decisions biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

We did not challenge our bacteria to play every possible match because it was too time consuming, only a few games. But we did show with simulations that they could indeed win all possible games. You don’t rank chess players by asking them to play all possible matches.
