Exploring the impact of sentence stems, playing with them in different contexts, changing them to see where the power lies - but always alert to the danger of adding more ‘tick lists’ to the English classroom. So helpful & generous Elaine!

Just sharing a couple of resources that encouraged students to think about the structure/staging of lit texts. First up: ‘An Inspector Calls’ #teamenglish #litdrive #AIC

Macbeth & structure: I printed these out, students chose a Q, found a partner to work with to write their answer. Stuck both parts onto a folded card and placed on a ‘timeline’ of the play, so written answers could be read under the Q flap. #teamenglish #litdrive #macbeth

A timeline’ of Shakespeare’s life I used to intro him to KS3. This contains the bare facts/evidence for him so that they have confidence forming their own opinion of his writing. They’d follow a ppt ‘lecture’ I’d give with photos & map key facts onto this as they listened.

Another ‘sketchy’ resource found while my kids were looking for A3 paper to doodle on earlier 😂 A revision aid for Phase 1 of Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Fill in details/quotations for each main event, return to the text to fill in those gaps #litdrive #teamenglish #tess #AQALitB

Supporting KS5 students to independently read set texts can be tough. Chapter summaries for Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Can assign Qs to diff students/ask to make own annotations/links to themes/cross-refs etc These were stuck in their texts Phase dividers #litdrive #Tess #AqaLitB

Spent whole career encouraging independent reading. It was yrs before I started reading MG/YA fiction for myself: that’s when everything clicked & genuine conversations and book swapping happened with students.Seems obvious but taking time to enjoy books is important!

The Department for Education has published the new 'The Writing Framework'. This useful framework for teaching writing is for primary schools (but it will be of interest to colleagues in secondary schools & more) See here: gov.uk/government/pub…
