The TNI Law has also become the most prestigious legislation in the history of Indonesian politics, due to its deliberation process taking only approximately three weeks to be passed. Certainly, there was almost no public participation in its discussion process

The revision focuses on four aspects. First, the addition of positions that can be occupied by active military personnel in ministries/agencies responsible for disaster management, maritime security, border management, and the attorney general’s office.

The revision also allows military personnel to hold more roles in the presidential secretariat. Previously, they could only be the Presidential Military Secretary, but now they can also be the Presidential Secretary.

It is suspected that this change aims to secure the position of Major Teddy Indra Wijaya, who currently serves as Cabinet Secretary, so that he does not need to resign from military service.

The second point of the revision is the extension of retirement age. As a consequence, this will place a greater burden on the State Budget and increase the number of high-ranking military officers without active positions.

The third point is the renaming of the Department of Defense to the Ministry of Defense.

However, the most concerning aspect of this military law revision lies in the amendment of Article 7, which governs military operations other than war.

In Paragraph 2, Letter b, Number 10, it is stated that one of the military operations other than war is assisting the police in carrying out tasks related to public security and order, as stipulated in the law.

In the revision, Article 7 includes a new paragraph, Paragraph 4, which states that the implementation of Paragraph 2, Letter b, shall be further regulated through government regulations or presidential regulations, EXCEPT for Number 10.

This article is reinforced by Article 20, Paragraph 2, which states that military operations other than war are carried out for the purposes of national defense and in order to support national interests.

It will brings the consequence of massive military deployment in a number of National Strategic Projects (PSN), which predominantly benefit extractive businessmen, particularly in the mining sector and its downstream industries.

The deployment of the military to seize people's land, intimidate the population, and ensure that extractive projects disguised as 'national interests' run smoothly has become inevitable.

This is why the people of Indonesia oppose the revision of the Military Law, as it would open opportunities for the subjugation of the populace by the military to serve the ambitions of the extractive oligarchy.
