#SomethingUnusual is the story of a burglary 🚨recorded in the Swithun's School Earlsdown House diary in 1910. Richard Allen whilst barefoot, stole 29 silver spoons, a teapot, a box of stamps and other items which he stashed in a haystack on Morn Hill. #IAD2021 #IAW2021 ARA Scotland

He described it as a 'very clever burgle' to a fellow lodger but he wasn't so clever as he was caught the next day! The items were recovered and the investigating policemen invited to a big afternoon tea at the boarding house to celebrate. 👮#IAD2021 #SomethingUnusual

We have a letter from the infamous Sobieski Stuarts who claimed to be direct heirs of Bonnie Prince Charlie in the C19th. Their claim has always been disputed and their book on Clan tartan patterns considered dubious. #IAD2021 #SomethingScottish #IAW2021 ARA Scotland

Cataloguing a series of letters today and came across this note (dated 1820) from Revd Charles Dyson containing a vine leaf from Mount Olivet. Amazed how intact the vine leaf still is! #StSwithunsArchive #olives #trees #vineleaves

Super great day! Attended our first ever School Archives and Records Association conference and spent the afternoon helping @StSwithunsEng #Alevel pupils choose records from our collection for a project about using context & culture in their approach to literature. #SchoolEnglish #FromTheArchives

It's the start of #Wimbledon today! We'll be tweeting over the course of the tournament but #DidYouKnow that #tennis was the first ever sport played at our school. It was introduced in 1884. 🎾

Today we found out from this letter in our archive, that feminist titan Josephine Butler who campaigned for women's suffrage, the abolition of child prostitution and the right for women's education was an acquaintance of our school founder Anna Bramston. 💪

After seeing an old photo re-enacted by Fettes College & Fettes Prep for its 150th anniversary, St Swithun's Archives challenged St Swithun's School & staff to recreate photos from its own archive. Jane Gandee & Reverend Paul Wallington recreated this picture of our school founders from 1896!
