The best stories are sentimental. Not in the syrupy Hallmark movie sense (although there’s nothing wrong with that!) but sentimental in the sense they stay with us - “I liked that!” or even better - "I’ll never forget that.”

A good story makes us want to know what happens next (thanks to Sean Hill): ”Once upon a time…” "And every day..." ”Until one day…” ”And because of that…” ”And because of that…” ”And because of that…” “Until finally…” ”And ever since that day…" ...Yes. A bedtime story.

Stories are not only about what happens next, but who it happens to. So, not what your story is about, but rather WHO your story is about.

In your story, a strong character is the person closest to the action: someone who has the most at stake and the most to lose (or gain).

Stories have a structure: beginning, middle, end. It's old, deep in culture, beautiful, even profound. But that's not why we use it. We use it because everyone OUT THERE knows it. Audiences recognize it, want it, and remember it.

When working in a culture outside your own, stereotypes and preconceptions become secondary. People become more real because everyone, everywhere is shaped by their own individual experiences, expertise and culture. When the barriers come down, the insights can last a lifetime.

A learning point from this disastrous presidential debate is that our clients can't afford not to be prepared for media, employee, client, & investor presentations. "Only the gifted few can 'wing it.'" You can't "walk back" a performance any more than you can unring a bell.
