I’m going to burst some bubbles here. As a financial advisor, I do often give people target savings amounts so that they can hit future goals, goals that we often spend a lot of time talking through. And it’s time well spent. But… 1/3 🧵

As a financial advisor or DIY investor, this may be the most important minute you spend today. Jonathan Kirshner & Demetri Kofinas lay out the difference between risk & uncertainty on Hidden Forces Perhaps the most impactful thing I tell clients is, I don’t know, and we can’t know.

PSA: if ever you find yourself on a, “financial,” website, and you can’t figure out exactly what they’re selling, or even what it costs, but somehow it sounds good… It’s insurance. They’re selling insurance.

Investing jargon sucks for most people. Two investing terms I have never liked: growth & value. What’s the average person supposed to get out of them? Spoiler alert: nothing helpful

I’m critical of financial services & financial advisors. In fact, my opinion of them & the way many treat their clients prevented me from becoming an advisor for a decade. What do I know? There has never been a better time to be a financial advisor, or a client. 1/10

I never thought I’d say it, but I love being a financial advisor. I still don’t love telling people I’m an advisor, but that’s another subject. But when I see all the bad takes about advisors, and by, “advisors,” in the world, it makes me want to pull the covers over my head.

Had a call with a prospective client last week. They asked me two questions: 1) why did your last client contact you? 2) why did your last client leave? If you’re looking to hire a professional of any type, consider asking these.

A character flaw of mine is eavesdropping on mid career professionals’ breakfast meeting conversations, judging them in silent condescension.

The amazing thing is that the true source of this kind of anti-central bank goldbug bitcoin thing has always been antisemitism. Wait long enough and 9/10 of the arguments end with them bringing up the Rothschilds.

My reading is that we’re effectively nationalizing US Steel and allowing Nippon Steel to lease the assets, make capital improvements to the assets, and receive the economics of the assets. But the US government now owns US Steel. This IS National Socialism.

You could sell all 640M acres of federal land and it would raise less than half what the federal government spends each and every year. Don’t let Mike Lee sell off your American birthright for six months of government spending.

Just going to leave this here as another example of how utterly manipulable and rudderless Trump is. He campaigned to make Juneteenth a federal holiday!

This is not investment advice, but it’s a touch of life advice. Buy stuff you want when you can afford it. Of course don’t buy stuff you can’t afford, and don’t just buy stuff for the hell of it, but you never know when you won’t be able to afford it anymore.

I always appreciate these little moments from Trump where he’s basically just talking to himself for the whole world to follow along and he interjects with the obviously true thing amidst a sandwich of inane, rambling bullshit
