I'm interested in World War One, particularly the Battle of the Frontiers, 22 August 1914. Outside of military history I like cycling and rugby @GreatWarGroup

The tiny hamlet of Latour had 90-odd adult males living in it in 1914. That August, 71 were rounded up and shot by the invading Germans. A walk around the tiny cemetery there shows nigh on every family impacted by these events. Wallonia Steve Marsdin Istoria Travel

One last 1914 tale from a martyr town - Gomery. Here a building used as a field ambulance was emptied by German soldiers. The wounded, stretcher bearers and some medical personnel were dragged to the site of this monument and killed. Certain officers were given a reprieve.

Ian T. Wallonia Steve Marsdin Istoria Travel The locals were clearing the battlefield of dead wearing red cross armbands on the request of one German unit two days after the battle. A new unit came in and accused them of looting the bodies

Lastly today, back to 1940. The solution to the unfinished Maginot Line. Reinforced houses north of Sedan. Imagine being one of the 5 men manning this one when the Panzers arrived. BOULENGER, COLLETTE, GUILBERT BELLENOU and LE GLEUT. None survived Istoria Travel Steve Marsdin

Today it’s the Battle of the Bulge and 1944-45. A bad day for Bomber command at Houffalize, but an even worse one for the civilians on the ground 🕯️ #Wallonia #Belgium #WW2 Steve Marsdin Istoria Travel Wallonia

We did make a detour… In honour of the first Frenchman killed on Belgian soil in #WW1. Part of General Sordet’s Magical Mystery Tour, died 111 years ago today. This French cavalry corps ambled round Belgium exhausting men & horses alike for no real gain in the first weeks of war
