In one of his recent blog posts Fred Wilson mentioned that “In one four year period, the New York Public Library, Grand Central, the subway, the Queensboro and Manhattan bridges...” and more were built. We must continue to build, improve, and scale. Let’s not miss our moment!

It will be interesting to see how #Palantir and #Asana fare today. Not much historical data to go off but I am curious if significant brand recognition is in fact a prerequisite for a successful listing. Palantir has some but not all positive and Asana’s is minimal.

In Q3 Twitch accounted for 63% of total hours watched and 91% of hours streamed. With Facebook Mixer (3.4%) shut down Twitch is far and away the leader in streaming. YouTube (5.5%) has a lot of ground to make up.

Airbnb went from a 72% revenue drop in Q2 to turning a profit on $1.3B in revenue last quarter. Unfortunately that included laying off 25% of the company but a surprising turnaround nonetheless. With the IPO looming it will be interesting to see how they fare in the public market

Oracle and HP have both stated they would be moving their HQ to Texas and others are sure to follow. In demand tech roles that have typically been heavily concentrated in SF will continue to be dispersed geographically. This will lead to an interesting effect on talent markets.

Bitcoin is now valued over $20,000 with some analysts projecting it to reach north of $60,000. Digital scarcity is surely a driver but so much of its value comes from people’s belief that it does indeed have value. If that continues with increased support from institutions 📈

Executive hiring didn’t miss a beat this year and though nothing replaces the value of in person meetings we have closed over 500 searches virtually this year! Learning- Zoom/WFH creates scheduling efficiencies and quicker processes.

It’s surprising to see the Visa/Plaid deal fall apart. What won’t be surprising is when Plaid independently grows their valuation 5x and beyond 🚀 Plaid’s solving an important problem and is led by a brilliant founder in Zachary Perret

Many CFOs I’ve spoken to have typically been interested in late stage pre IPO opportunities. Now with the rise of SPACs any company can argue that they’re a pre IPO company widening the opportunity pool even further.

Robinhood is officially a case study in the fragility of brand. It took them 7 years to build up confidence in their platform. It took them 1 day to switch from "by the people" to "against the people."
