Economic diversification is the new buz word in Barbados it seems. Let all ideas contend. Need for solid ideas and less wonderful descriptions of the problem.

It pains me seeing what is happening to our black brothers and sisters in Minneapolis, USA with the blatant police killing of one of our own, George Floyd and to read the mind boggling and decrepit response to all this by an elected President. Even from miles away it pains me.

It’s amazing how Russia could simply invade a democratic country and a man who once headed the mighty USA praises Putin for causing immense suffering. Let’s see who will stand against Russia.

Musing over the US Supreme Court’s decision on abortion rights, this statement from an upset American caught my attention: “There is an election in November, and extremist politicians will learn: When you come for our rights, we come for your seats.”

International politics. Wonder why would a Chinese “blown astray” weather balloon be over US territory and not previously intercepted by the Chinese after it was known to have left Chinese air space.

If I had to re-imagine Barbados, I would focus not so much on what the Government is doing but on the pillars that must be set in place now to create a better version of what Barbados must become.

Mount Gay Rum in Barbados celebrates 316 years as the oldest rum in the world but did you know it was plantation slaves in Barbados and the Caribbean who first discovered the value-added alcohol that could be fermented from sugar cane ?

Our economy is fragile and there are really no quick fixes. But our strength lies in our creativity. National budget need to financially support that creativity and give it global wings.

I sincerely hope that the majority of Americans will vote to preserve their democracy in November and punish those who sought to disturb it on January 6th.

Can’t believe that after so many years of contribution and sacrifice that West Indians in the UK now face challenges with respect to their status there. It’s time for us to face this challenge head on.
