Since Right to Counsel (RTC) was passed on 6/1/2022 in KCMO, we have changed the narrative on what is possible for tenants facing eviction. Over 10,000 tenants in KC have avoided eviction and stayed housed - including children, people w disabilities, veterans + seniors.

Stand Up KC leader Bill Thompson told KKFI how when he first started organizing, he wasn’t used to having a voice. Now, he’s raising his voice from KC to DC to share how #MOworkers “can turn our struggle into action.”

“I had to work 10 to 12 hour shifts six days a week, just to barely make ends meet. As a one-income household, my wife and children depend on me for stability. But despite feeling like I was working two jobs, I’ve been trapped in a cycle of debt.”

“By not paying me time and a half for all the extra hours I work beyond 40 hours a week, the debt starts to grow quickly. The thousands of dollars I’m losing out on in overtime pay each year could make a big difference in my family’s life.”

⚖️ Yesterday, IRIS drivers joined dozens of low-wage workers with Stand Up KC, community allies, and Heartland Center to file a class action lawsuit against @myzTrip demanding THOUSANDS of dollars of back pay in missing overtime wages!

“@myzTrip can afford to pay its drivers a dignified wage without running us into the ground. The company was recently valued at $251 million. That money isn’t going to me and my kids, or other drivers — it’s lining the pockets of the company and its CEO Bill George.”
