Interesting speech and change of emphasis from Reeves. Getting ahead of criticism on fiscal rules. Tone is now staunchly Brownite rather than Osbornite. Return to Labour emphasis on investment vs cuts. Question is whether that washes when day to day spending is so tight.

Worth noting Labour bringing back Sure Start should be getting more headlines. A brilliant Blair-era policy scrapped by successive govts. It gave kids the best start in life, backed by evidence, and its removal hit families hard. Good to see it return. Credit where it’s due.

Champions! Congratulations Lionesses — what a team. What a game. What drama. You dug deep when it mattered most and you’ve made the nation proud. History makers.

For the Guardian, I explored the weird and wonderful world of New Labour edits, a subculture on TikTok of teenagers making ironic montages of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, and the rest of the crew — set to Charli xcx, Chappell Roan, or Taylor Swift songs.  theguardian.com/politics/2025/…
