Reports say Taliban members have slipped into the UK under Afghan resettlement schemes. Bracknell has an Afghan migrant hotel — so I asked the Council’s CEO and Labour Leader what checks they’d done. Here’s the questions I asked, and the shocking answers I received 👇🏻🧵

Q: What steps have you taken to check what vetting was done on those placed in Bracknell, given reports national vetting failed? A: They won’t check — apparently it’s “not in their remit” under a national scheme.

Q: Have you sought written assurances from the MOD or Home Office that no high-risk individuals are in Bracknell? A: They won’t do that as they’ve decided it’s “not deemed necessary”.

Q: Will you ask for a pause on new arrivals until you’ve reviewed the vetting, determined no risk, and reassured residents? A: They won’t — saying they “don’t have the authority”. (But the High Court ruling allowing Epping Council to close a migrant hotel suggests otherwise.)

Q: Will you review how the Council came to support a scheme without first confirming basic safeguarding? A: They won’t do an internal review because they “don’t have safeguarding responsibilities within a national scheme”. That’s the bare minimum.

In other words: nothing has been done The Labour Council Leader also dismissed these checks. Instead giving the usual platitudes about “welcoming” Afghans, comparing it to past refugee groups — as if reports of dangerous ppl slipping through makes no difference 👇🏻

This is not the weak leadership Bracknell deserves. Epping Council shows those with the political will can act if they want to. And with the right leadership, these basic safeguarding precautions could be put in place tomorrow.

To be clear: most Afghans here will be fleeing the Taliban themselves, so we want them to be safe and treated with dignity. But Bracknell residents must be safe too. That is the Council’s first duty — and by letting ideology come before safety, they are failing to do that.
