How do small cracks turn into gigantic submarine slides? Zhang and Puzrin (2022) use numerical simulations to elucidate this transition from initial failure to subsequent growth of weakened sediment. Check out Michel Louge's highlight: fal.cn/3qq4r #AGUPubs

Numerical simulations based on the Material Point Method revealed a transition from slow (sub-Rayleigh) #anticrack to fast #supershear crack propagation. This transition may occur at distances about 3-5 meters if the slope is steep enough.

Mathieu Schaer, former EPFL-ENAC student, professional snowboarder and #environment #engineer MétéoSuisse send me this video a couple of years ago. The analysis of changes in pixel intensity frame by frame, confirmed the outcome of numerical simulations. 🎥 (c) Titouan Bessire

The physics of snow slab avalanches similar to that of earthquakes. By expanding the scale for snow slab avalanche simulations scientists EPFL-ENAC and @SLFDavos obtained a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying these events. actu.epfl.ch/news/the-physi…
