Doing what I can to leave every camp site and the planet as a whole in better condition than when I got here. I work for @USGS but my tweets are my own.

Peter Hefernen advocates for the voice of youth who are already envisioning the solutions to many of the earth’s problems. How many of us planning this endeavor will be retired before 2030? #OceanDecade

Great question here pointing to the tension between #OpenData and #indigenousdatasovereignty. We need to respect and work with this tension during #OceanDecade

“By 2030 there should be no datum left behind.” At #OceanDecade Interesting perspective but I’m not sure how practical. We are massively increasing observation data streams. Data reduction to detect important signals is key. Don’t throw out but manage the stream well.

In the pursuit of a clean ocean during the #OceanDecade, how can we compliment the alarm of “more plastic than fish in the sea” with policy-actionable thresholds similar to climate?

From Gilbert Siko at #OceanDecade. Scientists often approach dialog with indigenous knowledge holders with a solution already figured out. That doesn’t work in any relationship ( as my wife can attest).

Joking about an “ocean religion” aside, how do we think about the importance of religious and spiritual practice in understanding and influencing Homo sapiens during the #OceanDecade?

I wonder if “safe ocean” might be more about how humans learn to live in better symbiosis with an inherently unsafe part of our planet during #OceanDecade. images.app.goo.gl/LG4B6TAUz3P5Vn…

Sustainable harvest in #OceanDecade themes. Explore and exploit arctic and mesopelagic - 2 things we humans do “well.” Direct conflict with sustainability of course. How do we promote stewardship in this point of tension between us and the planet?

Loved the ideas promoted by others yesterday at #OceanDecade. Put this on the idea board this morning, “swimming anywhere makes you part of life in the ocean”

Not to be a downer, but perhaps we also need a worst practices registry with our best practices registry during the #OceanDecade. How important is it to celebrate where we went wrong and mix the bitter ingredients with the sweet?

Thought provoking illumination of facility disparity pointed out by Jaqueline Uku. What would a scientific facility/lab/equipment registry for #OceanDecade do to point out and help us address this problem?

Beautiful use of art to communicate. Let’s learn from this as we move forward to communicate science and observe and absorb art that should influence our thinking.

Great points from Carlie Wiener on doom and gloom messages. Good counter from Project Drawdown that we can learn from (stop militarization of climate, we’re not combatting anything). It’s about forward thinking and igniting positive action with #OceanDecade

1st day of #EcoForecast workshop Powell Center. Key concept from Dietz et al 2018 - “honestly uncertain eco- logical forecasts are still better than science not being part of decisions”. doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1…
