"In fact, when controlling for crime rates before GDT was implemented, population density, demographics, income, CCTV presence, and other factors, the study found fatal shootings actually increased through several phases of Chicago’s [ShotSpotter] rollout."

NYC map of ShotSpotter microphone locations. "SoundThinking equipment has been installed at more than a thousand elementary and high schools; they are perched atop dozens of billboards, scores of hospitals, and within more than a hundred public housing complexes."

Not only is Detroit bound by contract to not release the location of ShotSpotter sensors, the company is not required to provide locations to police and "will challenge any subpoenas for this location any data." Well, WIRED found them anyway. wired.com/story/shotspot…

Despite flooding the south & west sides of Chicago with gun detection microphones, ShotSpotter does not improve public safety. A recent study of Chicago's use of ShotSpotter found no decrease in gun violence, no fewer fatalities & no boost in arrests. peoplesfabric.com/blog/study-sho…

The controversial surveillance that Oklahoma doesn't use.... YET. Its imperative to our privacy rights that our state NOT adopt this spy tech! wired.com/story/shotspot…

Here's a case where ShotSpotter worked. A Chicago cop, startled by a cat, accidentally fired his weapon. The officer failed to notify OEMC he'd fired his gun, but ShotSpotter detected it, forcing the cop to own up to it.

Glad the wired story is bringing this into focus but it's been known that shotspotter coverage just so happens to be where the poor people of color are and isnt anywhere else

That's quite a cluster of ShotSpotter microphones in North Fair Oaks (the unincorporated part of San Mateo County bounded by Redwood City, Menlo Park, and Atherton - created by the rejection of early Athertonians. Good read: smcgov.org/district-4-war… )

In St. Louis, over a decade of gunshot detection data amounting to 29k alerts led to only *13* arrests directly tied to a gunshot alert. “High-volume agencies will likely experience substantial increases in their call volumes with remarkably little to show for it…”

What does a ShotSpotter sensor look like? It is not cameras, though those often accompany. They're microphones. They might be parabolic dishes but those often are point-to-point comms. Most devices are small and flat. ShotSpotter partnered with Israeli Airobtics to deploy drones.

NEW: The nine-month, $8.6 million contract extension that Mayor Johnson frantically hammered out with ShotSpotter to give CPD time to transition away from the gunshot detection technology just might be illegal, sources have told the Sun-Times. trib.al/OkPXawL
