To put the impacts in perspective, more West Virginians are employed by the federal government than the coal mining industry. 24% of WV's federal employees (5,500) are veterans. Thanks to Economic Policy Institute for partnering on this important factsheet!

Just finished "Nordic Socialism" by Pelle Dragsted. Both a great historical guide and blueprint for the future. Should be writing a review but very thankful William Banks gave me an early look.

Highly recommended--also, Doug Henwood's Behind the News convo with Vanessa Wills, I was expecting something interesting, but academic, but ended up being one of the most lucid interpretations of Marx I've heard in a long while.

The problem with the whole “women won’t marry lower status men” narrative is that, increasingly, American women are doing exactly that. My latest for The Atlantic, on the rise of women who are "marrying down." theatlantic.com/family/archive…

Amusing new description of the success sequence just dropped. We've gone from "Get a full-time job once you finish school" to "work full-time in [your] twenties." Turns out if you work full time you are not poor, which has always been what drove the success sequence.

The NDP in Canada's election are proposing price caps on a basket of grocery essentials, windfall profit taxes and a price watchdog. Serious proposals to protect people's cost of living from the US trade war.

This is one of the most insane and ridiculous attempts I've seen from a former boss trying to silence his former workers. A woman criticizing Harvey Weinstein and Sean Diddy Combs is "deeply offensive" — what now?? Just absolutely atrocious, unhinged behavior

Notable new research on how to frame Child Tax Credit expansion: —among Black & Hispanic people, "universalist" messages were just as persuasive as ones that highlighted racial equity; —among white people, universalist messages were more effective. academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/arti…

This is Brian Gladstone in Rachel Cohen's very good Vox interview, but I don't think I agree that an official poverty "definition & threshold is absolutely essential for determining & parceling out resources." Other nations with much more expansive social states get by without one.

Just dug out an old crisis theory syllabus. Somehow our professor failed to cover "ruling class lights own house on fire through sheer myopia, stupidity, and fecklessness" crisis tendency.

Merle Haggard's combination of pugnacious provincialism and bone deep empathy for the working poor said more about the American temperament than perhaps any songwriter of the 20th century. I wrote about some of his greatest songs a few years ago. A genius. stereogum.com/1870888/the-10…

It's unorthodox but why doesn't Pritzker say something along this line: "Like FDR I will betray my class. I know how the rich operate better than anybody, so I can beat their tricks."

Pope Leo XIV explains his choice of name: "... I chose to take the name Leo XIV. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.
